There is a Revit plugin to export a Navisworks file directly from Revit which maintains much of the data related to the Revit file. This plugin is available in the Tools menu in Revit Building and Revit Structure provided it was installed with the installation of Navisworks. If you are working on your home computer and you have not installed Navisworks with the Revit exporter, you can use one of the AE Computer Lab machines for this export. Note that it is not a standard export option, but instead was developed using the Revit API and is listed in the Revit application as a tool. This function will save the file as a Navisworks .nwc file which can be opened directly in Navisworks.
The Process:
(Basic model shown for workflow purposes only)
Begin with the model in Revit with the main 3D view open
In the main toolbar, select "Tools" ; "External Tools" ; "Navisworks"
An export dialog box will show up. Pick the place where you would like the Navisworks file to be saved, and name the file what you would like
Open Navisworks by double-clicking on the saved file. This will open the file in Navisworks. You may also open Navisworks, then open the file from the saved location by going to "File" ; "Open" ; then browsing to find the file
Lessons Learned:
If exporting the model using the Navisworks tool does not work, you can also export a DWF file from Revit, and load it into Navisworks. This can be done by going to "File" ; "Publish DWF" ; "3D DWF" and saving the DWF file. This can also be done from AutoCAD (Autocad to Navisworks) if Revit was not used. Using a DWF may be slightly more troublesome as the DWF will not carry over specific materials or textures applied to the original model
